| Artist Statement: My mission as an artist is to create work that is relevant and approachable to a diverse viewing public while maintaining a deep personal relevance and creative ideal. This self-imposed commission promotes the benefits of art as a communicative tool and supports the inclusive nature of art making as a necessary and vital component of a successful community. I would also expect that my exploration of ideas and issues is no different than anyone’s search for clarity and it is this connection that I hope to cultivate. In creating work for the public sector I have adopted the "art for the people" attitude that was prevalent during the post depression WPA public art era. I am also influenced by the great Mexican muralists of the same period that created work that was inherently infused with powerful political and religious symbolism. Although I prefer a more indirect approach in creating provocative imagery I admired the public accessibility to art that these examples provided. As an artist I consider myself a cultural representative and believe that I have a responsibility to create work that transcends the strictly personal aspect of my expression and the work for public consumption ethic. When generating ideas for public art I have always taken into consideration the immediate audience that will benefit from the work and looked to the representative community for inspiration and imagery. I have also on occasion incorporated words or phrases to create another opportunity to engage the viewer in a brief tactical conversation. With the responsible and intelligent use of word and image I choose to be an active participant in a culture of communication and interaction. Furthermore, I hope that my work will at most influence public conscience or at least encourage literacy. Beyond the sense of purpose and satisfaction that I receive I believe that the work becomes more than I who created it. |
